5 Volunteer Opportunities in October
5 Volunteer Opportunities in October
By Molly Hiipakka, United Way of 1000 Lakes
October is a month to celebrate the power of community, and the difference one person can make. Across our region, volunteers are stepping up to support neighbors, strengthen programs, and create meaningful connections. From helping families access essential services to brightening someone’s day with a simple act of kindness, each contribution fuels the work that transforms lives and builds a stronger, more caring community, making sure no one is left behind.
Answer the Call
Step up when it matters most—join the Itasca County Search and Rescue team. Volunteers are the backbone of lifesaving search, rescue, and recovery efforts, working alongside the Sheriff’s Office to keep our community safe. If you’re 18 or older, live in Itasca County, and are ready to serve in all conditions, this is your call to action. Make a real difference when your neighbors need you most.
Assist with Pet Adoption
Make a difference with every wag and purr! Great Tails Animal Rescue is seeking friendly, energetic volunteers to help at adoption events held every second Saturday at Central Square Mall. From greeting visitors and caring for animals to supporting coordinators and creating a welcoming space, you’ll play a vital role in connecting pets with their forever homes. Events run from 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
Step Up Against Poverty
KOOTASCA Community Action is hosting a powerful Poverty Simulation on Thursday, October 16 in Grand Rapids. Volunteers are needed to take on roles like teacher, banker, landlord, or police officer, helping participants experience the real challenges families in poverty face. No experience is required—just a willingness to engage and make a difference. Step up and help build a stronger community where everyone can thrive!
Enrich Patient Lives
Make an impact in your community by volunteering at Essentia Health–Deer River. Whether you’re brightening a patient’s day, lending a hand behind the scenes, or supporting community events, there’s a role tailored to your interests. Volunteers enjoy a welcoming team, free café meal with shifts of 4+ hours, gift shop discounts, and—most importantly—the reward of making a real difference. Step in, share your talents, and touch lives today!
Drive Change
Arrowhead Transit is looking for volunteer drivers to help community members—especially seniors—access vital services like medical care. Whether you can give a few hours a week or more, every ride makes a difference. Volunteers must be 18+, with a valid driver’s license, insurance, and a clean driving record. Use your own vehicle, receive mileage reimbursement, and make meaningful connections while supporting independence. Drive change in your community today.

Volunteer Itasca, powered by United Way of 1000 Lakes, serves as the region’s central hub for volunteerism—connecting people to meaningful opportunities that strengthen our community. Through this shared resource, you can explore current needs from more than two dozen local nonprofits. Last year alone, over 400 volunteers discovered opportunities that matched their skills, passions, and interests.
If your organization would like to share opportunities, contact Molly Hiipakka, United Way’s Community Impact Coordinator, at 218-999-7570. Membership is free and includes personalized technical support, along with access to a network of volunteer engagement professionals through the Volunteer Coordinators Network. The network’s next meeting will be held on October 9 at the Itasca County Family YMCA.
