United Way Starts Search for New Leadership Members
United Way of 1000 Lakes (United Way) is seeking four new board and committee members—particularly from nonprofit organizations, community groups, and the finance sector—to help guide its mission and broaden its impact. The organization focuses on fostering upward mobility, supporting vital safety-net services, and strengthening cross-sector collaborations that bring communities together to achieve shared goals.
“We strive to recruit community leaders who bring diverse perspectives, professional expertise, and lived experiences,” says Board President Hannah Madden. “I realized just how far United Way’s reach extends when I joined, and I’m excited to welcome new voices ready to lead and innovate.”
United Way especially encourages nominations from:
- Geographic: Individuals connected to communities in Itasca County or along the Cass and Aitkin County borders, including Ball Club, Bigfork, Coleraine, Calumet, Deer River, Grand Rapids, Hill City, and Marble.
- Age: Those aged 50 or older.
- Ethnicity: Persons of color or Indigenous peoples.
- Experience: Professionals in education, finance, health care, human resources, fundraising, public policy, or government relations.
Applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. on May 1, 2025. United Way aims to identify at least eight candidates to fill four open positions, with new members beginning their terms in July (and onboarding in June). Individuals interested in advancing the organization’s focus areas—Ready Kids, Resilient Families, Family Financial Stability, Healthy Minds & Bodies, and Safety Net services—are encouraged to apply or share this opportunity with colleagues.
Meet & Greet: April 10
Those seeking more information are invited to attend a Meet & Greet at Rapids Brewing Co. on Thursday, April 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event offers a chance to connect with like-minded community members, learn about service opportunities, and discover how professional skills and experiences can bolster United Way’s goals. Current board and committee members will be on hand to share their experiences, discuss their roles, and answer questions about what it’s like to serve. Reservations are encouraged, and complimentary appetizers will be provided.

United Way emphasizes that every volunteer voice helps shape brighter futures across the Itasca region. By sharing time, expertise, and collaboration, board and committee members can spark real progress for communities throughout the area.
