United Way Seeks Project Nominations for Calumet Day of Action
This June, neighbors helping neighbors will take center stage in Calumet as United Way of 1000 Lakes prepares for its annual Day of Action. Residents and small business owners have the opportunity to receive free volunteer help for outdoor projects, repairs, and community improvements that make a lasting difference.
To help identify local needs, United Way partnered with Community Economic Development Associates (CEDA), Itasca County Habitat for Humanity, and the City of Calumet throughout March and April to canvas neighborhoods door to door. Teams visited directly with residents, sharing information about the program and learning what types of projects would best support homeowners, businesses, and public spaces.
“Day of Action is about more than completing projects—it starts with listening,” said Calumet Mayor Mike Troop. “Going door to door gave us the chance to connect with residents, hear what matters most to them, and ensure this day reflects the real needs of our community. It’s exciting to see people coming together in a way that creates both visible improvements and stronger connections.”
United Way’s Day of Action provides free volunteer support for projects such as yard cleanup, minor exterior repairs, painting, landscaping, and other improvements that help make properties safer, more welcoming, and easier to maintain.
The community-wide volunteer effort will take place on Wednesday, June 17, bringing together individuals, businesses, and organizations committed to making a visible impact across Calumet.
“Day of Action is not only about improving physical spaces,” said Executive Director Kim Brink Smith, “but also about strengthening community connections and supporting neighbors in need.”
Residents are encouraged to nominate themselves, a neighbor, or a local business that could benefit from assistance. The deadline to sign up a project is May 15.
