United Way Accepting Applications for Emergency Food and Shelter Program (ESFP) Funding

Itasca County has been chosen to receive $23,521 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs. These funds are available through the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).

The program, administrated locally by United Way of 1000 Lakes, provides relief to individuals and families experiencing hunger, homelessness, and economic crisis.

A Local Board made up of representatives from local nonprofits, human service, and government agencies meets twice yearly to discuss community challenges and select programs with demonstrated capability to provide emergency food services, shelter, and utility assistance.

Eligible applicants must: 1) be private, voluntary nonprofits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Agencies interested in applying for EFSP Phase 41 funds must complete and submit an online application at uwlakes.org/nonprofit-resources by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, and attend the Local Board meeting on April 18, 2024, at 1 p.m. at United Way of 1000 Lakes (350 NW 1st Ave., Suite A, Grand Rapids, MN).

Community members knowledgeable about or interested in hunger, homelessness, and poverty in Itasca County are invited to inquire about joining the EFSP Local Board, as United Way is seeking local leaders, particularly those from faith communities, individuals 50 or older, Native Americans, and Veterans, to join the Board. To express interest, call 218-999-7570 or email molly@uwlakes.org.
