United Way Recognizes National Make-A-Will Month
August is National Make-A-Will Month, a time to highlight the importance of preparing for the future by creating a legal will. Yet, research shows that more than two-thirds of American adults do not have this essential document, leaving loved ones vulnerable and final wishes uncertain.
To make the process easier, United Way of 1000 Lakes has partnered with FreeWill to offer community members a simple, free way to create a legally valid will in as little as 20 minutes. The online tool guides users step-by-step to ensure their wishes are documented clearly and securely.
“Having a will is one of the most meaningful gifts you can leave for your loved ones,” said Kim Brink Smith, United Way of 1000 Lakes executive director. “It not only provides peace of mind and security, but also creates an opportunity to make a lasting impact by including a legacy gift to strengthen our community for generations to come.”
Creating a will ensures that:
- Loved ones are cared for. You can provide for your family, dependents, and even pets.
- Decisions are clear. Important healthcare and financial wishes are documented and legally protected.
- Your legacy lives on. Including a charitable gift in your will allows you to support causes and organizations that matter most to you.
The FreeWill tool is available to anyone—whether or not they live in greater Itasca County. Once completed, users can print and store their will with important documents. While the document is valid in Minnesota, United Way recommends reviewing it with an attorney for added assurance.
