Lumberjack Mile & 5K Set to Return During Grand Rapids Riverfest

United Way of 1000 Lakes is excited to announce the return of the Lumberjack Mile & 5K, an annual fun run that supports the organization’s community impact work. After last year saw a pause on group events, this year sees a return to an in-person experience on Saturday, September 11th, at 9 a.m.

The run takes place during Grand Rapids Riverfest, a two-day music festival in downtown Grand Rapids. This year’s race features a new course along the Mississippi River, with the start/finish line at the KAXE Radio Amphitheatre and takes participants through the area’s public art landmarks, concluding with live music.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming back our Lumberjack supporters,” said Kimberly Brink Smith, United Way’s Executive Director. “This year we’re offering it as a ‘hybrid’ event. Whether you’re running the 5K or enjoying a mile-long walk, the race offers both in-person and virtual options.”

Spectators and participants are encouraged to wear their best flannels and Lumberjack beards, with prizes going out to the best-dressed as well as race winners. Participants will receive a limited-edition, collectible T-shirt designed by Grand Rapids-based creator Jenny Farber of Chaotic Beauty Artistry.

For more information on the race and to register, go to uwlakes.org/lumberjack or contact United Way at 218-999-7570.

Proceeds from the event will support United Way’s work in the greater Itasca area, including their community investment grant program.
