Investing in Local Impact

When you give to United Way of 1000 Lakes, your dollars stay local—supporting programs and partnerships that help people right here in our community. Each year, funds raised through our Community Campaign are carefully invested in local initiatives that address the very real challenges people face across the Itasca area. What makes this process unique is that real people—volunteers from all walks of life—help decide how those funds are invested. Their insights, expertise, and passion ensure that every dollar is directed where it will make the greatest difference.

Volunteers are at the center of United Way’s investment process. They bring professional and lived experience across a wide range of areas, from community collaboration and data analysis to financial management and program evaluation. Many have backgrounds in education, public health, human services, or business, while others simply care deeply about improving the lives of their neighbors. Together, they form diverse panels that study funding applications, conduct site visits, and make thoughtful recommendations to United Way’s Community Impact Committee and Board of Directors.

Each year, these volunteers dedicate their time to review proposals from local nonprofits that align with United Way’s Community Impact Framework—a two-generation approach that strengthens the whole family. Preference is given to programs that address one or more of United Way’s focus areas that support education, financial stability, and health and well-being. Proposals are evaluated based on alignment with community needs, equity in program design, measurable outcomes, collaboration across systems, and organizational capacity.

Programs selected for funding receive more than financial support. United Way provides grantees with tools, guidance, and opportunities to learn from one another through coalitions and networks—helping them grow stronger and serve more people effectively. Each funded organization reports outcomes and progress twice a year, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement. These insights help determine whether funding will continue, increase, or evolve over time—ensuring that resources are always directed toward what works best for our community.

United Way invites you to see your impact in action and take part in this meaningful work. Join a Community Investment Panel, attend site visits, and help ensure donor dollars are being invested wisely in programs that move the needle for local families. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of community needs, connect with other professionals and volunteers, and play a direct role in shaping a stronger, more resilient region.
