Ice Golf Returns to Forest Lake in February

The Grand Rapids State Bank Frozen Fairways Golf Classic is gearing up for its fifth year on Forest Lake.

The event attracts more than 200 golfers and spectators and features an 18-hole course carved directly into the ice, raffles, silent auctions, a 500-golf ball drop, competitions for best team costume, and a best-themed hole.

Teams consisting of four players will gather on the morning of Saturday, February 24, at Blandin Beach for a noon tee-off. Like regular golf, the objective is to hit the ball into the hole using as few strokes as possible (but with a twist). Using brightly colored tennis balls, players putt with clubs consisting of a collection of rusty spades, brooms, and hockey sticks.

The entry fee is $25 per person/$100 per team until February 17, when prices increase to $30 per person/$120 per team. There will be a variety of attractions during and after the event, like firepits, food vendors, a beach bar, and live music.

“Frozen Fairways is such a fun winter event, and Grand Rapids State Bank could not be more proud to be the title sponsor, “states Noah Wilcox, President and CEO of Grand Rapids State Bank. “This fun event gets us outdoors to enjoy this part of the year with friends, laughter, food, and drink.”

At 3:30 p.m., the play will conclude with the annual Golf Ball Drop, when 500 numbered golf balls will be dropped from above the ice onto a putting surface, followed by an awards presentation. An After Party will wrap up the day’s festivities at Klockow Brewing Co. (36 SE 10th St, Grand Rapids) from 5-7 p.m. with live music by Hobo Revival. Chad’s Meet Wagon will also be on site.

Event proceeds go to event organizer Small Business Circle (SBC365), an affinity group of small businesses working alongside United Way of 1000 Lakes to lead positive change in the Itasca area. SBC365 members determine how funds are directed to make a significant positive impact. Learn more at uwlakes.org/sbc-365

Frozen Fairways would not be possible without the support of sponsors, which, in addition to the title sponsor Grand Rapids State Bank, platinum sponsors Paul Bunyan Communications and Grand Rapids Herald Review, and hole sponsors City of Grand Rapids, Club Cap Baker Lions Club, L & M Fleet Supply, Lake Country Power, Rapids Brewing Co., Smoke on The Water, True North Salon & Spa, US Bank, and
