February 11th Marks 211 Awareness Day

We’re all just one unexpected emergency, delayed paycheck, or natural disaster away from hardship. In fact, thousands in the region face life-altering obstacles like homelessness, hunger, and financial instability every day.

211 is a 24/7, free, confidential helpline connecting people to a comprehensive local social services database, offering vital assistance with food, healthcare, mental health, housing, utilities, childcare, and more. In 2023, more than 300,000 Minnesotans called, with housing-related calls making up the largest share. In 2024, United Way saw a 20% increase in calls related to basic needs. Key facts about 211:

  • Available 24/7, free, and confidential
  • Offered in over 180 languages
  • Specialists provide empathetic, non-judgmental care, connecting callers to resources that address their underlying needs.

Since 1974, First Call for Help has served as the local call center. Last year, they answered over 3,800 calls, with housing and income assistance as the top needs, followed by mental health, food, and transportation.

“211 is an essential resource, providing immediate help and long-term solutions by connecting individuals to the support they need,” says Cre Larson, Executive Director of First Call for Help. “Our specialists are trained to guide people through difficult times with care and understanding.”

On February 11th, we celebrate 211 Awareness Day to honor the call center specialists who connect people to these life-changing services. We invite you to join us in raising awareness for 211 and the incredible individuals behind the helpline who make a difference in our community.

211 helps us stay informed about emerging community needs, which is crucial for organizations like United Way of 1000 Lakes in shaping their support efforts.

“211 provides us with essential data that helps us understand what’s happening in our community and how we can best respond,” says Kimberly Brink Smith, Executive Director of United Way of 1000 Lakes.
