Celebrate the Heart of Our Community

Volunteer of the Year Nominations Now Open

At the core of every strong community are individuals who consistently give their time and energy to help others. United Way of 1000 Lakes is proud to once again invite the community to help shine a light on those everyday champions by nominating an extraordinary individual for our Volunteer of the Year Award.

For more than a decade, this annual award honors individuals whose selfless service strengthens lives, builds connections, and creates lasting impact across the Itasca area. Since its launch in 2015, the Volunteer of the Year Award has recognized neighbors who lead with compassion and commitment—often behind the scenes and without expectation of recognition.

Past honorees such as Shannon Antilla, Great Tails Animal Rescue, Karen Tinquist of Foster Love Closet, and Gwenn Smith of Grace House, exemplify what it means to serve with heart, vision, and perseverance. Their dedication has not only supported individuals and families, but has also inspired others to step forward, volunteer, and care more deeply for their community.

Volunteer recognition is a vital part of United Way of 1000 Lakes’ broader commitment to cultivating a strong culture of service. From our online volunteer portal (volunteer.uwlakes.org) that connects people with meaningful opportunities, to the Volunteer Coordinators Network (VCN), which supports and strengthens volunteer leaders across the region, United Way believes volunteerism is a powerful force for community change.

“Our community thrives because of volunteers who give their time and talents so generously,” said United Way Executive Director Kimberly Brink Smith. “When we take time to recognize their impact, we not only say thank you—we help elevate the value of service and inspire others to get involved.”

The Volunteer of the Year will be honored during United Way’s Community Celebration on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Timberlake Lodge. Finalists will receive recognition during the ceremony, which also features United Way’s annual Time for Art auction—an inspiring tradition that allows attendees to bid on local artwork using volunteer hours or dollars, celebrating creativity and service side by side.

In addition, award finalists will be highlighted in a special feature article during National Volunteer Month in April, further sharing their stories and the impact of their service. Finalists are selected by a review committee made up of United Way’s Board of Directors and Community Impact Committee.
