“Grand Rapids is my hometown. I attended college at NDSU for a degree in Business Administration, then married my high school sweetheart and we moved around for various jobs. In 2004, we were able to return to Grand Rapids for work and to raise our family in an area where we knew they would thrive. For the last 20 years, we have had the pleasure of raising successful triplet daughters who are finishing their college degrees. As a family we enjoy living by lakes and woods, being able to go boating, fishing, gardening, walking trails, and traveling.” 

What inspired you to be involved with United Way?

Being able to make an impact and better the lives of the people in my community. I started by flipping pancakes at the Lumberjack Fun Run a few years ago. 

What is the most rewarding thing you have taken from this experience?

 Learning how we can all make an impact on the lives of those around us by getting involved in our organization. I have met people whose lives have greatly improved by the work United Way does. We can all become better citizens by walking a mile in someone else’s shoes and helping build up those around us. 

What is one word you would use to sum up United Way’s work?

Crucial 

What impresses you most about the Itasca Area?

We make a big impact even though we are a small community through arts, culture, tourism, environment, education, industry, and much more. 

What is one thing about United Way that you think most people don’t know?

We all have access to a free resource by calling  2-1-1 to get connected to resources on basic needs and housing, education and child care, mental health and substance abuse, and money management and financial stability. 

What advice would you give to a potential donor who is considering investing in United Way?

You can make a difference in the lives of the people that live right here in our community by donating financially or giving your time and skills to volunteer.
