5 Volunteer Opportunities in April

April is a month of renewal, growth, and giving back. As the days grow longer and nature comes to life, it’s the perfect time to embrace the spirit of service. Whether it’s celebrating National Volunteer Month, supporting environmental initiatives for Earth Day, or lending a hand at local events, there are countless ways to make a difference. This April, take the opportunity to share your time, skills, and compassion—because every act of kindness helps build a stronger, brighter community!

Give a Lift
Do you have a good driving record and enjoy meeting new people? Volunteer as a driver with Arrowhead Transit in Itasca County to help community members get to important medical appointments. Volunteers must be 18+, provide their own vehicle, and have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and insurance. Mileage is reimbursed for every mile driven. By volunteering, you’ll make meaningful connections while ensuring individuals have access to the healthcare they need. Sign up today and make a positive impact in our community! Learn more.

Inspire the Next Generation
Join the Grand Rapids Smart North Tech Hub on April 8th to guide high school learners through a day of innovation at the Tech Crawl!  This will be an exciting event where over 50 students will explore hands-on tech fields like drones, 3D printing, music production, GIS, and more. Students will rotate through interactive stations led by local professionals, gaining insight into real-world career pathways. Volunteers are needed to assist with lunch, guide groups, and provide general event support to ensure the day runs smoothly.

Give Pets a Second Chance
Are you passionate about the welfare of animals? Fostering with Great Tails Animal Rescue gives pets a second chance at happiness, with all essentials provided—veterinary care, food, and supplies. Whether it’s a playful kitten, a loyal dog, or a senior pet in need, your love and care can transform their lives. Great Tails is also seeking volunteers to assist at an information booth during the SuperOne Register Campaign from April 18 to May 5. Register.

Be a Community Responder
Do you have an unwavering commitment to serving your community in times of crisis? The Itasca County Search and Rescue (SAR) team is looking for dedicated individuals to assist in critical search, rescue, and recovery missions. Whether responding to wilderness emergencies or supporting the Sheriff’s Office in urgent situations, SAR volunteers play a vital role in keeping our community safe. If you’re 18 or older, live in Itasca County, and are ready for a challenge—rain, snow, or shine——join their team today. Sign up.

Support Area School Pantries
Food is more than just nourishment—it’s a connection to culture, family, and tradition. The Flavors of Our Community initiative by United Way of 1000 Lakes invites you to help stock local school food pantries with culturally meaningful ingredients. Whether you assemble pantry packs at home or host a packing party with friends or colleagues, you can ensure that your neighbors have access to familiar and meaningful foods. Learn more.

Bonfire is an online platform powered by United Way of 1000 Lakes (United Way) that matches community members to volunteer opportunities with local organizations. Connect with these and other local nonprofits at volunteer.uwlakes.org and explore ways you can make a difference.

United Way also leads the Volunteer Coordinator Network (VCN), which brings volunteer professionals together quarterly to share ideas, discuss challenges, and work together to ignite regional volunteer action. The network will meet on April 10, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Itasca County Habitat for Humanity (510 SE 11th St, Grand Rapids, MN). Membership is free.
