Accountability in Action

At United Way of 1000 Lakes, accountability isn’t just a box we check — it’s part of how we show up for our community. Each year, we complete a certification process with United Way Worldwide, confirming that we meet the membership standards that guide all local United Ways across the country.

These standards help ensure that United Ways operate with consistency and transparency, no matter the size or location. They’re grounded in industry best practices, strong governance, and responsible financial management — all to make sure your trust is well-placed.

As part of this annual certification, we:

  • Maintain our 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and meet all federal, state, and local reporting requirements
  • File our IRS Form 990 each year and undergo an independent audit or financial review conducted by a certified public accountant
  • Follow a locally adopted Code of Ethics that guides staff and volunteers
  • Ensure our board is active, diverse, and engaged in financial and organizational oversight
  • Complete a volunteer-led self-assessment every three years to review our community impact and governance
  • Submit annual reports to United Way Worldwide to provide clear, consistent accounting of resources generated and invested

In partnership with staff, our Board of Directors oversees this work each year, with a focus on strong stewardship and integrity in every decision.

By meeting (and often exceeding) these expectations, we’re able to deliver on what matters most: earning your trust and ensuring your support directly strengthens the Itasca area.

We’re proud to uphold United Way Worldwide’s membership standards — because accountability matters to us, and so does our community.
