5 Free Family Activities

As fall approaches and children look forward to going back to school, get in a bit of family fun before everyone becomes busy with homework, sports practice, and other activities. Here are five free, family-friendly ways to have fun in Itasca County this August:

  1. Go hiking! Itasca County is full of beautiful places to walk, hike, and bike. Take a leisurely walk on a short scenic route, or challenge yourself with a longer hike. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and look for wildlife before everything is covered in snow! Visit Grand Rapids has a list of hiking trails in the area.
  2. Make some music with a public piano! The Grand Rapids Downtown Business Association (DBA) worked with members and local artists to place three pianos in downtown Grand Rapids, MN. The pianos are free for anyone to use, encouraging creativity and community. The pianos are located at Brewed Awakenings and UnWined Up North, both on 1st Ave. NE, and in front of the Lake + Co. Shop on 1st Ave. NW. Bring your sheet music and play a song, or just experiment! To learn more about these pianos, check out this article.
  3. Visit a park and play! United Way has Playstations set up at local parks, filled with gear like basketballs, jump ropes, and sidewalk chalk to encourage kids and families to get active. Gather your family for a game of kickball or soccer, or create some lovely sidewalk art! Find a Playstation near you.
  4. Volunteer together! Volunteering is a great way to connect with your family and teach children how to put their values into action. Volunteering also allows you to get to know your community even better. You can volunteer with us at an event, or commit to a long-term project like adopting a Playstation. Learn more about volunteering with United Way of 1000 Lakes.
  5. Attend ISD 318’s back-to-school event! Join fellow students, families, and community members on August 27th to celebrate the beginning of the school year and learn about programs and opportunities for students in Itasca County. The event will take place from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Old Central School. Come by and get ready for an exciting new school year! RSVP here.
