Lace Up for the 2025 Lumberjack Mile & 5K: Run with Purpose, Fuel the Future

Break out the flannel and lace up—United Way of 1000 Lakes invites you to run (or walk!) for a cause that fuels more than just finish-line fun. The Lumberjack Mile & 5K returns Saturday, September 6, 2025, offering a family-friendly way to help fight hunger and support local students through school-based pantry programs.

Races start at 9 a.m. at Grand Rapids Public Utilities (500 SE 4th Street), with race-day registration and packet pickup opening at 8 a.m. Enjoy a scenic course over the Mississippi River and through Veterans Memorial Park, plus music, treats, and fun at the finish line! Free parking is available onsite.

New this year, proceeds from the race will support United Way’s Hunger Initiatives, including its expanding School Pantry Coalition. What began as a small partnership with the Itasca Area Schools Collaborative (IASC) school pantries has grown into a coordinated network of 11 schools working together to combat hunger by providing nutritious snacks and weekend meals during school breaks.

Backed by over $15,000 in support, the coalition has already distributed more than 15,000 snacks and 1,200 pounds of weekend meal kits—reducing hunger, boosting attendance, and helping students stay focused, healthy, and ready to learn. Through collaborative purchasing, schools have secured discounted prices and reduced delivery costs. Looking ahead, the coalition plans to develop a coordinated volunteer program and further streamline operations to strengthen food access for students—and the adults in their lives.

“The Lumberjack 5K is more than a race—it’s a way for every step to make a difference,” said Kim Brink Smith, Executive Director of United Way of 1000 Lakes. “When you register, donate, or show up to cheer, you’re helping fuel our schools and support children’s success.”

Registration Details:
Entry is $35 for ages 13+ and $25 for ages 12 and under through August 31, 2025. Day-of registration increases to $40 and $30, respectively. Early registrants receive a limited-edition T-shirt designed by local artist Jenny Farber of Chaotic Beauty Artistry.
